Know the Physical Therapy Salary

By Zhengxiang Li

Physical therapists are an integral part of the medical team. They play many different roles in a variety of situations throughout the healing process. Several different factors affect physical therapist salaries.

The median salary for a physical therapist is approximately $71,000. Several factors can affect the salaries of a physical therapist. Factors such as location, years of experience, educational background and type of position can greatly affect the salary of a physical therapist.

For the physical therapist living in a state with a lower cost of living and less competition in the field, he or she can expect to make less than the therapist who resides in a busy city within a state with a much higher cost of living. Jobs of all sorts in states where there is more competition tend to pay more because each workplace wants to make a more attractive offer than the competition, especially for jobs that are in high demand.

It only makes sense that a person with many years experience in a certain field has had the opportunity to hone their skills and become an expert in their chosen field. A person who has experience will make more money than someone who has just graduated from college. The only time this may not have as much bearing is if both physical therapists are new or inexperienced in a certain area of the physical therapy field.

Physical therapists have different educational backgrounds and different amounts of schooling. Someone who has taken the time to go to school and earn the highest degree possible is going to make more money than a person who has only gone to school to get the minimum amount of schooling required for a certain position. In addition, a physical therapist that has the maximum amount of schooling can go from school directly into a management position or teaching position where they can make the most money.

Different workplaces have different requirements and levels of expertise that are required to meet the level of standard set forth by the employer. A physical therapist that works in a nursing home environment is going to make substantially less than the physical therapist that decides to work in a hospital. Take it one step further and the hospital employee is going to make even less than the physical therapist that decides to take their talents to the professional sports world.

There are several factors that affect physical therapist salaries. Learning what these factors are and then deciding which field of physical therapy you want to work in will help you in determining what an acceptable salary is for you. Take the time and do your research before locking in on a particular field. Find a job that is fulfilling as well as one that you are compensated accordingly for and your job will never feel like work.
